How to load webfonts without breaking the theme

I tried a couple of things, without modifying the theme itself. The simplest solution would be to upload the webfont-files (it ends up in the assets folder) and load it with @font-face in the custom.css, but this doesn't work. After that I tried loading the font-files from an external source, which also doesn't work. I tried the font locally and this works without any hassle. Is loading (external) fonts from a custom css file prohibited maybe?

I hope anyone has an answer for me

What do you mean by 'locally'?

could be a lot of reasons.
    - Is the path to the fonts correct?
    - Did you define the font-family property in the css

If you can share a bit more ( like all the code, or your webshop), its easier to come to a solution
