Is there a way to classify gift cards so they are shown as a separate line on the sales tax reports?

I want to be able to see what the sales for the period were without having to run a report of sales by item. This is for the actual sale of the gift card, not for the redemption on the gift card. I thought about maybe setting up a different tax class but wasn't sure if that would work, any suggestions?

    Hey @bathjunkiehouston and @TrolleyMuseum ,

Currently, gift cards are a feature-functionality within retail and are exempt from the normal tax class/sales tax setup done in the store as they are, by default, a liability.

Due to this, they are not taxed upon and appear as a 0$ sale when the funds are received, later on marked as profit once the gift card was used to pay for items in store.

You can enable or disable this feature by going into the Settings --> Optional module.

But they appear in sales numbers on the sales report. I realize that they aren't taxed when sold, but if you look at sales numbers - they are included. If the sales report would show them as a separate line so they could be easily excluded from totals, that would be great.

    Hey @bathjunkiehouston

If you performed the sale using the Gift Card button in retail, the sale should be counter-balanced by a negative value and will only appear in the Totals report or other sales report as 0$. (see the example below)

The only report it will appear under is the Payments received report or anything pertaining to Gift Cards or Deposits.

The Payments received report will show the incoming payment and the re-allocation of the funds to the Gift card (seen below)

The only time they would appear as a completed sale with a positive value is if you create an inventory item into your inventory as a Gift Card purchase, which isn't recommended as the Gift card function exists in Retail.

    Hope this clarifies things!

This is only for lightspeed gift cards? We sell in-house gift certificates and gift cards on shopify, we don't use the lightspeed gift cards.

    Hey @bathjunkiehouston ,

That's okay! The Gift card function in retail is essentially used as a placeholder for the number itself so that it properly classifies gift cards.

By default, yes, we support the UPC-A and EAN-13 barcode standards, however if the ID is 13 digits or more, the numbers do stay in the software and are considered as gift cards. I believe it is less than 12 digits where the system does not recognize them.

If the ID is less than 12 digits, you could attempt to simply increase the digit count to 13 digits where it holds the gift card number partially inside. For more information on this, please call-in to support so we can walk you through.
