Retail Webhooks

  1. Your customers have been requesting webhooks for some time now.
  2. Webhook integration in your other products shows you are more than capable of this task. In fact, most of the code probably exists.
  3. It is 2022.
  4. Given 1 - 3 above, what possible reason can Lightspeed have for not providing this capability that doesn't have a nefarious/selfish motive behind it? The most likely reason I can come up with is some distorted desire to "lock-in" to your "ecosystem." If that's not it, I'd like to hear an official reason.
  5. If you have no legitimate reason for not implementing webhooks in the retail environment, when should we expect their release?

    My uneducated guesses as to this:

    1) Lightspeed purchased Retail from acquiring MerchantOS back in 2013.

    2) While MerchantOS's web-based solution did apparently possess an API, webhooks weren't included.

    3) Since the acquisition almost 8 years ago now, little has been done to either enhance the API or introduce more common developer conveniences, such as webhooks. Which come standard with most "cloud" solutions nowadays.

    I honestly don't think it's forced lock-in. More of a lack of development commitment and/or resources. If you take the time to search through the forum I'm sure you'll run across very valid requests that have been "forwarded to the developers" years ago. A lot of these requests have echoing sentiment as well.

    For me, if I want to get data from Retail rather than rely on webhooks I just periodically poll via the API. While not real-time, it's immediate enough for our requirements.

    At the expense of running afoul of the moderators for maybe promoting too much.. Just wanted to throw out that I have a service that offers a webhooks for Retail. They're part of a larger package, so it may not be practical if one is looking for only webhooks. But, it does mean one doesn't have to worry about building a system to poll the API!     There are no webhooks coming from the Retail. It's been "on roadmap" for years, but I don't think it's likely we'll see them any time soon, if ever.
