Product Variant backOrder default

When creating new product variants via the API, it appears that the default for "allow backorders" (as set in the workflow settings) is only used when creating the default variant, bot not when creating other variants. 

Can you explain how the defaults are used when creating product variants via the API?

    Any variant that is tracking its stock (stockTracking = enabled), will allow backordering, this option needs to be turned on from the UI.
