Updating Items Via the API Versus Inventory Import

If we updated an existing item's attributes (e.g. - product tags, pricing, web store long description, etc.) via the API, will this automatically update the item's modified date? Apparently this modified date field would be a good criteria for syncing up particular items in our online product integration routine.
And similar question for using the Lightspeed Retail inventory import tool. If we push new values in through that, will that update the affected item's modified date?

Any modifications to the Item via the API or the UI will update the timeStamp field to the current time. Also, changes to the inventory of the product, via a Sale, PO, etc., will also update the timeStamp field.
